"He’s like an old-fashioned movie star in my eyes; you know, very gentlemanly and very polite, and very concentrated in his art. In a word, I would describe Viggo as being very inspiring."

"Philip Seymour Hoffman, certainly one of the great actors of our time, told us in a Venetian hallway of the Hotel Excelsior how he regarded Viggo Mortensen as one of the masters of the profession. A point of view that is totally shared."

"In [Eastern Promises], Viggo was wearing Armani. We don’t allow him on the street like that, because he can’t carry off the class when he’s being himself."

Viggo: I was paid a great deal of money [to film the Eastern Promises fight scene].
Cronenberg: When we started to shoot the scene we were surprised to discover that Viggo has no genitals so we had to CG [computer-generate] them in.
Viggo: I had to give some of the money back!
Cronenberg: It was very expensive CG.

"It’s funny: you look back on these things 10 years later and ask yourself, ‘Who had a major impact on me?’ As an actor, it was Viggo. I was unpacking a load of boxes recently, recounting old memories, and I remembered how lucky I was that he was around me at that time."

Viggo’s favourite thing to do was to spring on me the night before, that he’d had a long talk with Fran and Peter, and he really wanted the whole scene to be in Elvish. And I love to speak Elvish but I was just like, ‘Argh.’ I wanted to kill him. Because it always seemed that I had more Elvish to speak when we were doing the scenes than he did. I’m glad he did push that becatuse it’s so great to hear, and it really adds a beautiful quality and depth to their relationship, and to the film in general.

“Viggo really likes the ears; he would always stroke them. He thought the fans were going to have some elven ear obsession, so he had to throw a little stroke of the ear in to every shot he could.

Interviewer: Viggo, we hear you’re a fan of horses. Is it true that you took some horses from Lord Of The Rings?

David Cronenberg: But he’s a horse thief, that’s why he did that. He basically had sex with all the horses in the movie. That was his way of dealing with it.

Viggo: It wasn’t great with every single one. But I did my best.

"We also had a lot of fun singing duets. In Belvedere Gardens where Freud did take his walks, and then you see him in the end, in his morning walk, we were singing at the top of our lungs, which surprised the public and some of the journalists. He has a good singing voice and I did harmony. In Belvedere, we sang that song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” including all the high notes, which Michael hit really well."

"There was a scene in my study and Jung is sitting in a chair. I offered him a cigar and he said no, he smoked pipes. He had coffee and cookies, as Jung had an oral fixation. He was always eating. Freud collected phallic art. I was gradually moving these phallic pieces closer to Jung’s coffee cup. It wasn’t until his saucer was completely ringed by these penises, that he realized when he put his cup down — “What is this?” Michael looked around — he thought it was the art department."
